Avenida Aragon House Church
The Avenida Aragon House Church is an ever-expanding house church
in Oceanside, California. My husband, Cary, and I joined the church
in January 2002. We belonged to a very large church in Oceanside
but did not really feel like we were a part in the church. I helped
out in the nursery and we participated in many of the extra activities
that the church offered but still felt disconnected. We have two
small children and this was also a struggle in such a large setting.
We were yearning for and praying for a church we could call home.
God answered our prayers and planted a church right in our home.
Our neighbors approached us with an invitation to what they called
“house church” at their house. They said it wasn’t
a small group or a bible study, but it was church. We thought
they were starting a church in their home that would later find
a larger building to have “normal” church in. We underestimated
their intentions.
Today church is everyday life to us. We have fellowship everyday
with our fellow neighbors. Whether we are walking to the mailbox,
or mowing the lawn or just hanging out watching the kids play,
we are loving and caring for each other the way that God wants
us to.
Our church consists of many ages ranging from 1 year to early
fifties with 12 adults and 10 children. We started out as the
“married with children” house church but have grown
into a diverse church with married couples, single young adults,
and children. The majority of our church lives in our neighborhood
but we also have people from other cities in North County who
belong. We have an open door policy for anyone who wants to come
and see what God is doing with us.
We meet on Thursday evenings in our home and a couple of other
homes as well. Each family brings a part of the meal and we sit
down to eat dinner together. While we eat we share what God is
doing in our lives. We share the good and the bad and through
this we have really become a family to each other, each of us
with something to share and some one to listen. We pray together
and for each other and we also have a worship time with the children.
While we share what God is doing in our hearts, the kids play
and then sometimes do an activity. We are challenged with the
responsibility of teaching the children about God and Christianity.
This is something the traditional church took care of for us,
but now is our responsibility. It is exciting to see how the kids
love God.
We really feel God is calling us to love people. Jesus tells us
to “love your neighbor as yourself” in Matthew 19:19,
and that is what we strive to accomplish. Everyday we share God’s
love and compassion with others in our lives and through this
we hope to have opened hearts and opened opportunities for others
to know God.
